Large Impact Grant Projects

Current Large Impact Grant projects

The Horizon CDT Large Impact Grants support CDT students to take their research beyond their PhDs and explore how it can make a difference in the wider world.

Here you can find out more about the ongoing projects, what they are exploring and the people and communities they are working with:

“What’s all this AI stuff about?” Co-designed AI Education for Older Adults
Angela Higgins (2022 cohort)

About the project:
This project will work with older people to create a practical and accessible programme about AI. It will help residents understand how AI is being used in everyday life, feel more confident using new technologies, and think about how these technologies fit with their own experiences and needs.

African Nottingham; A Participatory Workshop Series and Exhibition Project Exploring African Diasporic Ethics for Image-creating Technologies
Favour Borokini (2022 cohort)

About the project:
This project brings together people from African backgrounds in Nottingham for a series of creative workshops looking at how African identity and culture are represented in pictures, museums and online. Participants will create and share their own images and use them to talk about identity, culture and how African people are represented in the UK.

Enabling Experimentation with AI-Driven Interactive Spaces in Performance-Making
Pavlos Panagiotidis (2022 cohort)

About the project:
This project will turn Pavlos’s PhD research into a simple toolkit that artists can use to explore AI and new technologies in theatre rehearsals. The toolkit will make it easier and more affordable for artists to try out these technologies without needing specialist technical support. Workshops with professional artists and drama students will give them the chance to experiment, build confidence and explore how AI could become part of their creative work.

Cards to Connect: Design Policy with People in Mind
Violet Nguyễn (Phuong Anh) (2022 cohort)

About the project:
This project looks at how fictional profiles, or “personas”, can help policymakers better understand the different people who use transport. The project will create a simple card game to help policymakers use personas when developing transport policies, with the aim of making decisions more inclusive and better suited to people’s different needs.
