Dr Ewa Luger

Dr Ewa Luger, a Horizon CDT alumna from our first cohort, earned her PhD in 2014 and has since become a leading expert in artificial intelligence (AI) and data ethics, achieving the rank of full professor at the University of Edinburgh in 2022.

Roles and Contributions

Ewa is co-programme director of Bridging Responsible AI Divides (BRAID), a £15.9 million national investment by the Arts and Humanities Research Council programme, designed to embed Arts and Humanities knowledge more deeply into the AI ecosystem. She is also co-director of the Responsible Natural Language Processing CDT at the University of Edinburgh.

Ewa is a member of the DCMS (Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport) College of Experts and has worked with the European Commission and the World Economic Forum. She has also advised companies such as Microsoft, Meta and the Data Management Association on responsible AI practices. Currently, she serves on the leadership council for the Centre for Artificial Intelligence (Future of Privacy Forum) and sits on multiple advisory boards for AI initiatives.

Research

Ewa focuses on the social, ethical and interactional challenges of AI and data-driven technologies. She explores important questions such as:

  • How can AI respect user privacy and consent?
  • How can we make complex AI systems understandable and usable for everyone?
  • How can AI avoid excluding certain groups or creating unfair power imbalances?

Her research is widely recognised, with over 40 published works and many talks at conferences. In 2020, she won the University Chancellor’s ‘Rising Star’ Award for her outstanding contributions to research.
