Alumni Update: Stan Piasecki explores the future of space governance through new research project

We are delighted to share an update from alumnus Stan Piasecki, who has been working as an Associate Professor of Law at Hitotsubashi University in Japan since April 2024.

Stan’s research focuses on the relationship between law and new technologies. His PhD examined how data protection law can better protect vulnerable people using smart home technologies, exploring the challenges of applying GDPR principles to connected devices and considering how privacy can be built into technology from the outset.

Continuing his interest in how legal frameworks respond to technological change, Stan is now leading a five-year research project, “Law Beyond Treaties: Norm Formation in Space Governance and Japan’s Role”, which looks at how rules and norms develop in the growing field of space governance.

As space activity expands through scientific research, commercial activity, and international cooperation, there are increasing questions about how it should be regulated and how different actors can work together. Stan’s research explores how governance can develop alongside these changes, including the role Japan may play in shaping future approaches to space law.

From smart home technologies to space governance, Stan’s work examines how law can respond to new technologies and protect society as innovation continues to evolve.

Stan is keen to connect with others working in space law and welcomes opportunities to collaborate and exchange ideas.

We wish Stan every success with this research project and look forward to seeing where his work takes him.
