After earning his PhD in 2019, Martin began his academic career as a Lecturer in Computer Science at Swansea University. During his two years there, his research focused on designing and evaluating interactions with AI technologies—both in domestic settings and within the UK healthcare system.
Martin has since transitioned into industry and now works as a Senior User Experience Researcher at Bold Insight, part of the ReSight Global network of research agencies. In this role, he leads user experience and human factors projects for a wide range of clients, from startups to multinational technology and healthcare companies. His work spans exploratory research—investigating emerging trends in technology use—to the human factors validation of medical devices for both patients and healthcare providers.
While the context of his work has shifted from academia to consultancy, Martin continues to apply the core research methods and critical thinking skills developed during his PhD.
Beyond his professional roles, Martin has also made a mark in the research community. Since completing his PhD, he co-founded the ACM Conversational User Interfaces (CUI) conference, now a leading international venue for research on conversational technologies. He also helped establish the Halfway to the Future (HttF) symposium, a quinquennial event that reflects on the past, present, and future of HCI design and research.
