Alfie was part of the 2018 Horizon CDT cohort and graduated in the summer of 2023. Their PhD research investigated power, personal data, and museums. It took them around the world to work with arts groups, cultural institutions, and researchers to offer unique, engaging, and empowering experiences to members of the public.
Since graduating, Alfie has continued to thrive at the University of Nottingham as a Research Fellow. They have persisted in developing engaging HCI experiences for the arts with the Mixed Reality Lab, as well as working with government, industry, and academics to explore ethical and responsible technology applications of robots and drones via the Horizon Digital Economy Network and the Trustworthy Autonomous Systems Hub.
Alfie’s passion for multidisciplinary research and qualitative research, carefully honed within the CDT, provides a constant drive for them to push further. They have delivered a wide range of teaching and education internationally, at the University of Nottingham, and for their beloved CDT, and have even taken on their PhD student from the 2023 cohort. They have also been privileged to present their work internationally at conferences, museums, governmental agencies, and arts organisations and continue to push to make their research accessible, engaging, and meaningful.
All of this was made possible by the ongoing care and support of the Horizon CDT and the people that constitute it. Coming from a background of Human Geography, the CDT provided Alfie with a safe and empowering space to learn how to develop meaningful, truly interdisciplinary research. This philosophy shines through in their ongoing work and forms the core of their approach to teaching, researching, and wider ‘real life’ events.
