Dr Feng Zhou

As a member of the Horizon CDT 2017 Cohort, Feng holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science specializing in additive manufacturing. His work bridges academic research and real-world applications, encompassing robotics, human-computer interaction (HCI), and generative design. Feng has collaborated extensively with artists, architects, and engineers, creating innovative solutions and immersive experiences. His projects have been showcased at renowned exhibitions, including Exo-Evolution at ZKM in Germany and Thallus at Milano Design Week, highlighting his commitment to the creative and interdisciplinary potential of additive manufacturing technologies.

Since completing his PhD., Feng has built a multidisciplinary career with nearly a decade of experience in additive manufacturing, focusing on large-scale, non-planar processes using six-axis industrial robots. He co-founded an additive manufacturing startup and served as Head of Additive Manufacturing at AI Build. In parallel, he has led pioneering research in HCI, such as designing personalized prosthetics for dancers using generative design and motion capture, and advancing human-robot interaction (HRI) through innovations in facial recognition and path-planning for interactive robotic systems.

Currently, Feng is a Research Fellow at the Centre for Additive Manufacturing, University of Nottingham, and joined the Soambotics project in 2024.

The Soambotics project explores how AI can enhance human understanding of the world and ourselves by combining art and technology to create AI-driven robotic experiences that inspire meaningful connections. This aligns with Feng’s expertise in additive manufacturing and his groundbreaking contributions to HCI and HRI.

Feng’s career exemplifies curiosity, collaboration, and a commitment to bridging disciplines. His key achievements include developing custom extrusion systems for robots, leading innovative industrial projects, and exploring the intersection of art, design, and technology. These experiences reinforce his belief in the transformative power of technology and the importance of cross-disciplinary teamwork to enrich human experiences. By pushing the boundaries of innovation and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, Feng is driving impactful advancements that merge creativity, technology and human connection, shaping a more inclusive and imaginative future.
