We are seeking a suitable candidate to undertake an interdisciplinary PhD studentship commencing September 2023. The successful candidate will work with the multi-national company Reckitt to explore how Artificial Intelligence and other digital technologies (e.g. sensors) can be used to support current human operators to optimise manufacturing processes and deliver environmental sustainability benefits.
Reckitt manufacturing a range of products broadly across the categories of Hygiene, Health and Nutrition and this theme will focus initially on key processes such as granulation and products such as lozenges, with the options to expand to others within the business.
The research will focus on understanding the general steps required for combining sensors and machine learning within Reckitt’s manufacturing environment and how they can augment current workers to achieve quantifiable and verifiable sustainability benefits. The theme is led by David Branson who has expertise in automation, manufacturing, process optimisation and digital manufacturing with the potential to engage with supervisors working in other areas including human factors, human computer interaction, augmented and mixed realities and sustainable production.
The studentship comes with an enhanced tax-free stipend and all fees paid. The 2023/24 stipend rate has not been confirmed by the funding body but will be in excess of £20,000 per annum. This project is open to “UK Home status” applicants only.
