Lucy Hitcham Publishes New Book

We’ve got some great news to share! 🎉

Lucy Hitcham, a member of the Horizon CDT 2023 cohort, has published a new book, Critical Perspectives on Smartphone Addiction, co-authored with Dr Richard James, as part of the Palgrave Studies in Cyberpsychology series.

It’s a deep dive into how smartphone addiction is defined, measured and debated — and why those details really matter for research, policy and practice.

Here’s Lucy in her own words:

In this book, we take a critical and comprehensive look at smartphone addiction. Throughout the chapters, we explore conceptual and empirical issues, from how it’s conceptualised and measured, to methodological challenges and implications for treatment and policy. We explore debates around the limitations of existing research, how future work can better address these complex themes in behavioural science and discuss implications for research, practice and policy.

Whether you’re in psychology, digital media studies, behavioural science, education, policy, or simply interested in how technology shapes our lives, I hope this book offers valuable insight and sparks thoughtful discussion.

This book has been a long time in the making, being both challenging and rewarding. We hope it encourages more thoughtful, nuanced conversations about technology use, wellbeing, and psychological science.

Thank you to my excellent co-author Richard James, the editorial team at Palgrave Macmillan for their support, and to colleagues and peers who offered feedback and encouragement along the way.
