Last week we kicked off the new academic year with our Horizon CDT Start of Year event held at The Orchard Hotel on University Park. This was a chance for our students and staff to reconnect, share research and look ahead to an exciting year ahead.
The two-day programme was packed with opportunities for learning, discussion and networking. Students took part in poster sessions, standing by their work to present and exchange ideas with peers. Each cohort voted for their favourite poster, with a £15 prize awarded to the best presentation.
Alongside the posters, we held a Projects, Events and Opportunities workshop, giving students space to share what’s happening in their research and beyond. We also welcomed Mike Payton, who ran an engaging Telling Stories workshop, helping students develop confidence in presenting and framing their work for different audiences.
Of course, no CDT event would be complete without good food and good company. We shared lunches together throughout the event and rounded things off with a celebratory evening meal in Nottingham.
It was a brilliant way to mark the start of the 2025–26 academic year. We look forward to everything the months ahead will bring – new projects, new opportunities and plenty more chances to come together as a community.
