Following the success of our Alumni Networking event on campus last summer, the Horizon CDT was delighted to host our first ever dedicated Horizon CDT Student and Alumni Residential Retreat last week. Held over three days at Belton Woods Hotel and Spa, in a peaceful countryside setting, the event brought together current CDT students and alumni to share experiences, explore future collaborations and co-create a supportive alumni network – all within a relaxed, engaging and productive space.
The retreat opened with lively sessions where students and alumni shared their “side hustles,” discussed how hobbies fit into academic life and explored the balance between research and personal passions. Alumni also gave inspiring talks on early career research journeys, and current students reflected on their recent placements and real-world experiences.
Day two began with a collaborative session led by alumni to develop a future Horizon CDT Mentoring Programme. The aim: to leave the retreat with a work-in-progress proposal for a mentoring scheme that can grow into a lasting support structure for the community. This was followed by a fun group activity (the social deduction game Spyfall), more alumni-led talks on knowledge exchange, securing research funding and navigating industry conferences. An interactive inclusive design workshop rounded out the day’s sessions, offering creative ways for participants to collaborate and learn from one another.
Of course, no retreat is complete without some relaxation. Attendees took part in calming yoga sessions and got creative during a fun interdisciplinary T-shirt design activity that captured the spirit of the Horizon CDT.
One of the standout moments was the Speed Networking session – a lively and engaging way for students and alumni to connect. Everyone had the chance to chat one-on-one, swap stories, share career tips, and ask questions before rotating every two minutes. Fast-paced, friendly, and full of great conversations!

Great meals and excellent facilities helped ensure that everyone had a chance to connect, recharge and enjoy time together outside of the formal sessions.
A huge thank you to all who attended and contributed – especially the alumni who took time out to share their expertise and help shape the future of our growing community. We look forward to turning ideas from the retreat into action over the coming months!
