Angela Higgins (2022 cohort) will be presenting her poster Understanding Technology Use & Chronic Pain in Older Adults: Towards Developing Robots for Self-Mangement at the IEEE UK and Ireland Robotics and Automation Society Chapter Conference.
The 7th Annual IEEE UK and Ireland RAS Chapter Conference is designed for those passionate about robotics and automation. It is taking place on 21 and 22 February 2024 at the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University.
Centred on encouraging collaboration and sharing knowledge, the conference provides a chance to connect with industry leaders as well as explore pioneering research, delve into emerging trends, and participate in stimulating discussions.
Understanding Technology Use & Chronic Pain in Older Adults: Towards Developing Robots for Self-Management
A Higgins, S Benford, M Hall, H Blake, P Caleb-Solly
Introduction
• Chronic pain is a common and often disabling condition, common in over 65s,
where 49% are living with some form of long-term pain [1]
• As robots are often proposed to assist older adults [2], it should be considered how
monitoring and management of pain can be integrated into future interventions [3]
• To accomplish this, we propose recruiting older adults from a retirement village in
Nottinghamshire, for a co-design process to generate and test ideas
• In the first stage of the research, we conducted a survey to understand current
technology use, as well as health and chronic pain status, to lay foundations for
future work with robotic devices and recruit suitable participants
